Are there any moms out there who use some sort of white noise machine to help their babies/toddlers sleep/nap longer?

I have not used one with my toddler son. But now that I have a 3 month old baby, the 2 kids' sleep schedule is so different, I'm thinking of buying one for my baby. My toddler is very loud all the time. I'm currently using a white noise internet channel on my laptop to keep my baby from waking up. But that's not really a good solution because I need to use my laptop when she is sleeping!

Any suggestions on a particular product? Pros? Cons? Thanks!

We bought an air purifier and use that - so it does double-duty, and we figure it can be useful after its stint as white noise generator! (That being said, we will use it with our 2 year old, to drown out house noises once she's in bed)

We picked up the Arm & Hammer Air Purifier at Factory Direct for $20. Sounds silly, but the cheaper ones work better as white noise makers, since they are noisier!!

    Hi,

we have used both a white noise machine and an air purifier.  We like both, no preference other than the white noise machines are really light and small and easy to travel with if necessary.  I did like the point that the air purifier acts as double duty, and with one of my children, I actually found it helped her to sleep better because her nose didn't get as congested.

I definitely find them extremely helpful and effective, you really can't go wrong!

I picked up a white noise machine at the last baby show - we have found it so handy. It's small, easy to travel with and can run on batteries (but we haven't had to resort to that yet, thankfully).

Here is the model we have: http://well.ca/products/obus-forme-sound-therapy-relaxation_574.html
We picked our up for $25 so I am sure you can find it a bit cheaper.

Thanks for your all comments! I just found a cheap sound machine (Conair spa Therpay Sound machine) for $20. I'll try it with my baby tonight to see if she likes it. I do get the point about the air purifier though. I just need to find one that's on sale!

Any radio will also do, if you put it between real channels, where there is only static... (that's what 'white noise' is). I put it on FM 87.6 and it's a steady white noise consistently.

I use the Conair on the birdsong setting.  I chose that setting as I have a friend and her 5 year old still asks for that as she goes to sleep.  I figured that was a good recommendation as any.  I like that it is portable and can run on batteries or an outlet.  My son is now 15mths but when he was younger would actually put on the stroller or take in the car.

He is a pretty terrible sleeper so although I am not sure it completely helps I think it is useful to drown out other noices and as a sleep cue.  I turn it out after bath as we do pjs and diaper.

    good luck!

I use a fan during the summer months and music all the time. I try though to use one or the other only at times, so my boys don't get use to just one or both.

We use a white noise mp3 (soft wind blowing) and play it all night long as well as during nap times. It totally mask all the outside noise, so we could have guests over after baby sleeps around 7:30 pm. My coworkers also bought me a sleep sheep but it only last 45 mins, you have to keep going in the room to press the button in order to keep the white noise going, which I find not very practical.

A friend of ours bought us two Sleep Sheep as a shower gift for our twins. Best gift ever. It works on both newborns and adults! :-)

I particularly like the whale sounds.
