Potty training and night time

My 33 month old is pretty much potty trained during the day (has been for two months now). The thing is, in the last few days she has been pretty adamant that she does NOT want to wear pull-ups at night, but wants to wear panties ("I'm a big girl"). So, she now either wakes up to go to the potty (she wants me to turn on the light but can generally do the rest herself), or wets the bed (in which case, I have to change her and the bed sheets). If we put on the pull up, she simply takes it and her PJ's off and lies naked in the bed.

The bed changing and/or waking up to go potty is wearing on us and our sleep... any suggestions?

I personally think that is amazing that your daughter wants to use the potty at night. I dont know how is your schedule but if i was you i would be really glad for her behavior and i would encourage her to keep using the potty at night even if it meant waking up many times to take her :).
one thing you could do is keep the potty next to her bed and leave a little light so she can do it on her own.
i think for it to happens on its own you should (based on the times she usually wakes you up to pee) make an schedule for you to wake up and take her to pee (i think is better than the cleaning up)
And congratulations!! your little girl is growing up!

My niece was wetting the bed a lot because she wasn't waking up to go.  My sister started getting her daughter out of bed around 11pm before she went to bed herself and put her on the potty.  My niece wouldn't even remember it the next morning she was still pretty much asleep.

I think it's great too that your daughter doesn't want a diaper at night. My daughter is 34 months and has been potty trained for almost a year now during the day, but I still put her diaper on at night. I've been waiting for her to object to it so I can go to the next phase :-) I agree that you could try putting a portable potty beside her bed (with a waterproof sheet underneath of course) and a night light in her room. Or you could put a night light in the bathroom and hallway as well so she can use the potty in the bathroom. I would still advise using a portable potty on the bathroom floor because it's more sturdy than the big toilet which your daughter might fall off of when she's half asleep (I know mine would). Hopefully you've already been able to solve this and if you have, I'd be really interested in knowing what has worked!

Hi all - thanks for the encouragement! So the waking up to go potty was short-lived. She has since progressed to simply peeing in the bed without waking up and then staying wet all night :(

We've always had a waterproof protector on her bed (crib/ toddler bed and big bed) as well as night lights in her room and the bathroom, and we now have everything set up for her in the bathroom (potty seat on the toilet, step stool to get up there as well as a second step stool to reach the basin to wash hands) - but she doesn't wake up on her own to use it.

We've woken her up to take her and this worked for a few nights, but then she started screaming and crying about being woken up, so now we've given up on that. So after bathtime, we ask her to put on a Pull Up - if she's not agreeable (most of the time she is!), we put on panties and tell her we'll be waking her to go potty. Depending on the circumstances that night, we then either put on a Pull Up after she's asleep or wake her up to take her to the potty. To our dismay, we've discovered she has a big bladder and has to be taken twice - midnight and around 4am - in order to ensure no bedwetting, despite restricting liquids before bedtime.

The current 'agreement' we have with her is: if she wakes up three nights in a row without peeing in the Pull Up, then she can wear panties all night. The funny thing is, the very first morning after we told her this, she said, "I *am* dry", insisting she had not peed - of course, the Pull Up _always_ feels dry, so we had to show her an unused Pull Up to convince her otherwise! Anyone know of a diaper/ pull-up that _doesn't_ keep baby dry?! (No, the 'cool alert' Pull Ups don't register with her either...)

    Hi Debbi,

You can try putting a wash cloth as a lining for the Pull Up so that both you and your little girl can feel the wetness. How about that?

The daycare lady suggested this to me when I was potty-training my older son... She said to put regular underwear on him and put the pull-up on top. That way he would feel the pee but it wouldn't leak out. Good luck! I'm in the middle of training my 26 month-old son. He doesn't seem to mind sitting in his poo poo muck...so I find it more difficult than my 1st one :P
