    Hello all,

I'm looking for tips/suggestions/recommendations for a child car seat.  My daughter is 9 months and quickly outgrowing her Peg Perego infant car seat.

There are so many options/features, I don't know what is truly necessary. I do know I would like to keep her rear facing as long as possible.  But does it really need a cup holder, arm rests, recline option...???

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sounds like you need to be shopping for a convertible car seat! We chose to go with Britax because of their reputation, and because of their high ratings with Consumer Reports testing. Also, their car seats have higher weight limits, which met the new Canadian car seat requirements long before they came in to effect this year.

One more thing you may need to consider is your vehicle. Some car seats are huge and may not fit in your back seat without pushing the front passenger seat all the way forward.

We first bought the Britax Diplomat but DD didn't like the extra side protection on either side of the head, so now we have the Britax Marathon, which she loves.

I personally don't feel the 'extras' are necessary i.e. cupholder, arm rests, etc. However, I do believe the recline is not an additional feature, but requirement for correct installation of the seat. For Britax convertible seats, you only use the seat in reclined position when it is rear-facing - this is so that you get the correct angle of the infant's head/ neck. When you turn it around forward-facing, you should *not* have the seat in recline position. It needs to be fully upright so that the back is lined up closely to your vehicle's seat.

Lastly, there are some great tips and other info on the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website.

We opted for the Britax Boulevard for our son.  When he was rear facing, it did mean that the front passenger seat was moved up a bit, since our car (Mazda 3) is not too big.  That was fine, though; it just meant that my (tall) husband would drive and I (slightly shorter) would sit in the passenger seat.    Now that my son is facing forward, space is not an issue, and we are all still very happy with the seat.  I've also had excellent customer service from Britax when I called them about a safety question.

I would definitely recommend the Britax, I have the Advocate and my daughter fits into it quite well, it has the extra side airbags and although it is a bit pricey I feel secure knowing that i've given her the best possible protection in the event of the unthinkable occurring.  The seat is quite spacious and we have chosen to keep it rear facing longer than necessary so there is some impact to the front passenger seat but i usually sit in the back if my hubby is driving and so does everyone else when i'm driving plus it gives them the excuse to play with my daugher.

I actually work for the Ministry of Transportation so I know without a doubt that Britax is usually high on our list of recommends.

    Good luck,

    Natasha

We have bought 2 Britax Boulevard for our 2 kids (2 years old and 3 months old) and we really like them. However, like Debbi had mentioned, the Britax Boulevard does not fit into our Toyota Echo. We found out from the guys whom we bought the car seat from (http://www.carseatinstallationexperts.com/). They installed the car seat for us for free as well. May be they can tell you if your car can fit a Britax carseat.
