    Baby Wraps and Babywearing

    • 21-Oct-09 13:21

      Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone out there uses a baby wrap as a carrier in public.  I did a lot of research on the internet about Sleepy Wraps and Maya Wraps, and finally found a stay-at-home mom who makes them herself out of stretchy bamboo material.  So I recently bought one, and I LOVE it -- unlike commercial carriers (such as the Snugli, and Baby Bjorn, etc.), the wrap really distributes my baby's weight so I don't get pain in my back or shoulders like I did with the other carriers.

However, it is a little tricky to tie on and get the baby into it.  The standard size is 5 yards (yeah, it's a LOT of fabric even though I got mine custom made to be 3 & 1/3 yards since I'm pretty small)--but it is really worth the extra minute or so it takes because baby feels almost weightless and secure once it is on.  So far, I've been "wearing" my baby at home and finally feel the freedom to do housework and move around without feeling like I'm abandoning her to her playpen or limiting myself to doing things only while she naps!

I honestly haven't seen anyone wear this wrap in public, however...not sure if it's just not that popular yet or because it honestly is a little funny looking (if you wear your baby tummy to tummy, the wrap looks almost like a t-shirt so it looks like you're still pregnant but there are little legs sticking out of the bottom of the wrap!)

Anyway, just curious to find out if other people have used wraps before and what they've thought of them.

Hi Aldora.  I reckon its very popular right now and had seen quite a number of new moms wearing it at the mall.  Very convenient perhaps esp in the summer months.  But yeah, quite trendy and refreshing.  Btw, what's the usual weight limit to use this?

      Hi Nina,

I've been told that the wraps can be used right away for a newborn up to a toddler who is 35 lbs. There are a variety of ways you can tie the fabric and put the baby in.

I'm guessing it could be used for an even heavier toddler, but that's based on personal endurance!  I'm not sure I would want to be carrying my daughter around like that when she's anything close to 30 lbs, but who knows?  It's nice to have that option.  :-)

      Hi Aldora,

I'd really like to see it:) Do you think you can bring it to the yoga class next time you come?

      Julia

    • Hi Julia,

Sure, no problem.  Mia and I are coming to yoga this Wed, so I'll bring the wrap and show you how to tie it before or after class!

      Hi,

I have used 3 baby wraps/slings for my 7 month old boy. The first one was a pocket sling that I made. It was good for the baby from 0-3 months. By the end of the 3 months, my baby was moving too much and he was too heavy for the constricting pocket sling.

So we bought a Baby Bjorn. He loved it right away because he was facing out (my boy has good neck control early on). I went out with him in the Baby Bjorn all the time. By 5 months he was almost 20 lbs and the Baby Bjorn was hurting my shoulders. I continued for a while until he was 22 lbs and I just couldn't carry him in that anymore.

My boy is now 24 lbs. My friend gave me her used Azure wrap (5 yards of knit material). And I love it! My shoulders don't hurt and my baby seems to be fine with it. I have only used it at home so far. I'm going to test it out tomorrow when we go to the mall. I'll let you know how it goes.

      Cheers,
      Darmeen.

      Hi Aldora,

Could I get the name and contact information of the person you bought your wrap from?

My baby is 17 pounds and I have been using a Snugli up to now, but I'm finding it hard on my shoulders and back.  She doesn't like being in the stroller, so I'm looking for other ways of taking her out.

      Thanks,

      Shilaja

Don't use wrap but love Ergo baby carrier!!!  tried Baby Bjorn - it did hurt my shouldres a lot, then my girlfriend got Ergo, I tried it and liked it as well. I use it from when my son was 5 months. He is almost 11 now.

My friend swears by the Ergo baby carrier too! I tried hers but unfortunately I'm short-waisted and the Ergo baby didn't fit me! :-(

I tried the Azure wrap. I walked around outside for 30 minutes (brisk walking) and it was okay even though my son is 25 lbs! The only drawback is that it takes a while to put on because it's 5 yards of knit fabric. The good thing is that the weight is well distributed and my shoulders and neck didn't hurt, unlike the Baby Bjorn.

      Hi Shilaja,

I bought the wrap from a woman named Marie-Josee, and here is her website:  http://www.momshomemade.ca/default.home.asp

She works out of her home, so I was able to just go and pick up my wrap (she is super nice!), but she can also ship or possibly drop off the wrap to you if necessary.

I am still using my wrap all the time to carry around my daughter who is now 7 months old.  I hope that information helps you!

Here's an interesting (and referenced) article about babywearing and how holding your baby vertically upright is much more beneficial for them.

I saw this woman in the mall with a Kokopax carrier. She said it's the easiest, most comfortable baby carrier she has ever had! Are there any moms out there who have used one of these carriers? It has a kick stand which seems to make loading the baby easier.
