I'm seriously thinking about starting my 17 months old on Elimination Communication (also called Infant Potty Training, Natural Infant Hygiene, Potty Whispering). I'm reading the book "Diaper Free before 3" and it is very interesting. It reminds me of what my parents and my grandparents' generation did with us.

Any parents out there practicing Elimination Communication? I would love to hear  your experience!

I'm not using EC but I am considering it.  I just have to get myself motivated to start looking for my DD's cues.  I know that she often pees within 5 mins of having her diaper off for diaper-free time or during a change, but I haven't noticed any cues before she pees.   Ditto for her poops - she makes a distinct little cooing noise after she has pooped but I need to figure out when one is coming :)

I am hoping someone who has done EC chimes in!

Hi, My son is 18 months now and he know when he goes poo. He tells me either when he is about to do it or when he had already done it. it is so cute he comes up to me and tells me holding his diaper. On this note, i take him to the bathroom with me to shhow him what is going on there and he helps flush the toilet and says bye bye to "thing '  :)

My daughter will be in Gr. 1 in September, so as soon as she is off I am bring the potty out. I just do not want to introduce him to it while she is around cause I know they will be goofing around and it will be harder for me to have him focused on the potty training. A couple of minthes back I tried to put him on the big toilet like how i trained my daughter, but he did noit want to do anything with it. I found the little prtable poptty annoying, I hated washing or rising it all the time, And the toilet seat for the toilet was always covered in oee so I just had my daughter hold on to the toliet seat, and she was trained on the big potty.

So wish me good luck cause potty traing time is coming up very soon.

Also my daugher was a July baby so Summer was a great time to potty train her...OMG what will I do in the winter or how will I do it!? Any suggestions? Do i need like 10 snowsuits..lol...

    Tunde

Why is it called Elimination Communication?  What's being eliminated?

I suppose that means elimination of human waste?! I'm starting my son this coming long weekend to see how he responds to it. Wish me luck!!

And good luck to you too Tunde! I'm also getting a headache thinking about snowsuits/snowboots, etc for my 17 month old. He will surely like to run around in the snow. Should I buy it now (I see them in the stores already) or should I wait a couple more months (when most stores are out of sizes that I want)?

i have attempted EC and had some success, though my 23 month old DD is not yet toilet trained. However I've been putting her on the potty since about 6 months, and every morning since about 12 months. She tells me when she goes #2 - mostly after the facts, but in the last few months she's been telling us before, which is great cuz we put her on the Throne right away and are getting a decent "hit rate". Moreover, with EC, since she was very little, I could tell by her body language and facial expression when she is "going" - so its great for when your child is pre-verbal. When you see them do their "face" or body action, you can take them to the toilet right away.

I still havent done full on cold turkey potty training....I need a free weekend where we focus on that. But I do think the EC helped get us about 60% there.

BTW.. babycenter.com has some excellent articles on potty training. Look up the 3 day potty training technique.

I didn't aware what I'm practicing is called Elimination Communication.  We have been putting our daughter on potty since she could sit with support, i.e. 5 month.  We do not purposely toilet train her, but to eliminate the effort of washing pooppy cloth diapers.  We routinely put her on potty when she wakes up, as soon as she finishes a meal, and when she is about to sleep.  So far she rarely poo on the diapers, and there are about 50% chance that her diapers are dry when we take them off (which can be reused right after).

I've been putting Olivia on the potty since about 4 months, in the mornings, after naps and periodically during the day.  I've been 'cuing' her as well and I can't wait until she tells me when she needs to go!  Like Kathy, I have very few poopy diapers and save about 2 diapers on average a day.  I read Diaper Free Baby while pregnant so I started as soon as I felt comfortable.

I love it.  As it turns out, my aunts use to do this naturally with their kids.  I love when books/groups like this come out that tap into 'ancient wisdom' since we seem to be so disconnected from the natural.

I found it not only useful to reduce diapers and be potty trained earlier, but along with practicing attachment parenting, it gives me one more reason to stay in tune with Olivia.  This aspect of EC is really helpful for me.  And it's fun.  Now I just put the potty seat on the toilet because she can already get off the potty - and then peas on the floor as a joke.

    :)

So good to hear others in the community are practicing...

This is a great story/insight. Makes a lot of sense.  When did your kid stop getting her diapers soiled with poop?

I guess I should have started EC earlier with my boy! So far my efforts have not been successful. I put him on the potty after a meal. He usually already pooed or wouldn't poo in the potty. As soon as I put his diaper back on, he would run away and squat somewhere to poo. I guess he is too used to pooing in a squat position instead of sitting down.

Any suggestions on how I can get him to poo in the potty instead of in a squat?
