He usually already pooed or wouldn't poo in the potty. As soon as I put his diaper back on, he would run away and squat somewhere to poo. I guess he is too used to pooing in a squat position instead of sitting down.

Any suggestions on how I can get him to poo in the potty instead of in a squat?

Have you tried the age old way of quickly picking up the little kid soonest and have him sit on the toilet or potty seat?  Cardio work-out for Mum but that's just to signal him hey this is the way it should go, and of course some kind words to make him motivated to do the same.  Kids do the darnest thing, don't they? I've had and having similar transitions with my kids and oh my if only they could be easily programmed like computers. ;D

Thanks NIna. I tried to sneak the potty bowl under him when he started to squat. But he wouldn't have it and stood up right away. I followed him around with the potty but he just wouldn't squat again, until I gave up chasing him around.

I'm thinking of building a squat toilet for him in my home.... just kidding! :-)

As soon as we start to put her on potty, she stops poop on diapers.  It is not that she knows not to, but we just put her to potty at the right time. Many say this is not toilet training the young kid, but is a training to parents to read the signal.

@ Darmeen and Kim:  LOL  You just made my day.  The America's-funniest-home-video of motherhood.

I'm frustrated sometimes as to why kids seem afraid to let go IN the potty - like do they see a dark hole underneath with a monster and its big wide mouth open fangs and all?  Recalling the animation Monster Inc., I think I could use some funny and colorful stickers all over the bathroom and the toilet seat to make it more poop time friendly. And perhaps some kiddie books stacked beside the toilet like some adults read while on it.

Kathy, kudos to you.  Why?  Because I believe your method is very cool and sensible.  Its like you've established a good habit for yourself and your little one. Does she fuss if she needs to go and won't go until she's on the seat?  And since you yourself have established that instinct you know its time, right? I'll definitely keep your input in mind.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I was grateful to start early too, because at this stage, baby doesn't have much freedom to stand up and stay away from the potty.  She just have to stay there as long as you are holding her there.  :)

My daughter doesn't actually fuss when poop/pee in the diapers.  I guess she will learn eventually, and that will be the time we have to bring the potty with us wherever we go.

Wow - I highly recommend starting EC as soon as possible.
I've had such a rewarding month.  At 13 months Olivia is cuing me when she's needs to go and is holding the #2's until I dash her to the bathroom.

Studies suggest that sphincter control is impossible until at least 18 months.
I think they underestimate children and their ability to learn way more than we
    give them credit for.

    EC works, it really works!

Anyone practicing EC on a newborn before?

I'm starting to EC my 7 week old part time. She usually poos/pees right after a feed (I don't even have time to burb her) but the rest of the poo/pees are really irregular. So I'm only putting her on the toilet right after a feed during the day. At night I don't want to startle her too much so she just poos/pees in the diaper.

I'm still trying to figure out her schedule (perhaps she doesn't have one yet until she is older). I'm not always successful in cuing her either. I would love to hear other moms' stories in ECing their newborns.
