Bath time is not a relaxing experience

Saturday, July 12, 2008 8:59 PM | Cheryl

My 9 month old son has never liked the bath.  He screams from the time he is approaching the water, until he is taken out.  We have tried to keep the room warm, give him toys, sing to him, etc.  I thought that it would get batter, after a few months.

He doesn't seem to mind having a shower when Daddy holds him.  The problem is that it is not practical to only give him showers.  He needs to get used to being in the bathtub.

Has anyone else experienced this with their babies?  If so, please share anything that may have worked.  I am open to any suggestions at this point.

    Hi Cheryl,
My daughter liked her bath for the first three months and then around four months she started getting fussy in the tub and crying when we put her in, then one day for fun we put her in the big tub with me for a bath and she LOVED it. So the next day we put just a bit of water in the big tub (without the baby bath) and she still liked it, so she has been in her big tub ever since.

Try to see if he'll take a bath with you in the tub, then let out most of the water and leave in him in there and she what happens. the following day, put him in by himself and see what happens. He may just want more space to move around. Make sure to get a bath mat though, so that he doesn't slip.

Let me know how it goes.

I agree with jumping into the tub with him. You could also go as far as to enroll your self in a swim class. This helps babies become comfortable being in and around water. Just a thought:-)

Our 4 month old had always disliked his little tub - his arms & legs would splay out and he cried through each bath. A few weeks ago we started sitting him up in our big tub with my husband or me in it with him. Now he loves it -- we play in the tub while we get him cleaned up. He likes it so much we've added it to our bedtime routine. I'd give the big tub a try sitting him upright. Good luck.
