Baby gear - which items are essential?

    There are so many things to buy for baby - it's easy to fill up your house with gadgets and gear "for baby", even before baby arrives.

    Share with us - which items are truly essential, which are nice-to-have, and which are just gimmicky?

    The 3 things I found useful for my first born:
    - swaddling cloths (calmed baby down really quickly)
    - vibrating bouncer (my son fell asleep in it easily when nothing else worked)
    - playpen (good for when we go on trips)
