As a first-time mom, most of us prepare by reading as much as we can. The Internet is a wonderful source of information, but of course, you cannot always be sure of the accuracy or authenticity of webpages. Or perhaps you just prefer books.

There are so many books out there on every imaginable topic. Which ones have you read and found to be actually useful - ones that you refer back to again and again.

The one and only book that is a must, to my opinion, is The Baby Whisperer Book, created by Tracy Hogg

I found the books from Sick Kids doctors to be very useful. They're clear and well written.

Also, I find books from authors Elizabeth Pantley and Ann Douglas are wonderfully useful.

The "Mother of all" books (by Ann Douglas) are great in that they summarize what a lot of the other books say, so you have everything in one place.

Here's my Book List:

Caring for Kids - general health and care for all ages, covering the major diseases, symptoms, etc.

The Baby Care Book - excellent information on all aspects of caring for baby for the first 12 months

The Toddler Care Book - good reference for 1-5 years

Bed Timing - interesting research about how *when* you try sleep techniques is more important than *what* sleep technique you use

Look Who's Talking - excellent book on how to help your child develop language and speech

The Wonder Weeks (this one is really hard to find to buy)

The Happiest Baby on the Block - my favourite on soothing baby and getting baby to sleep

The No Cry Sleep Solution - lots of good tips with the AP principles in mind

Better Sleep for your Baby and Child - good summary of all the sleep training techniques

Better Baby Food - good recipes in here

These books are all available at the Vaughan Public Library (I usually borrow them first to help me decide whether or not to buy them)

On a side note, I've bought most of the above books on huge discount from bookcloseouts.com or on the clearance table/ shelf at my local Chapters store.

When I was having issues with my infant twins and their sleeping I was told by a friend to pick up "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weisbluth. It became my sleeping bible.

We really found the following books extremely helpful.

1. "Sleeping Through the Night: How Infants, Toddlers, and Their Parents Can Get a Good Night's Sleep" by Jodi Mindell, PhD. This one helped us understand differences between infant and adult sleep patterns. Based on actual research conducted by the author.

2. "On Becoming Baby Wise" by Gary Ezzo. This was really helpful by its suggested schedule and sleep strategies. We did not use everything from this books, but we picked and choose what tips worked best with our family. There is also a blog, "Chronicles of a Baby Wise Mom" that was extremely helpful when I was implementing some of the suggestions and needed feedback from other mom's using Baby Wise or just wanted to read about other Baby Wise mom's experiences. http://www.babywisemom.com/p/blog-index.html

We also read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and "Baby Whisperer" but those are already mentioned above.
